More than a place to swim, exercise or get fit, Swan Active is where people connect and friendships grow.
A familiar face at the pool
For many members, a familiar face at the pool or gym can lead to a friendly nod, a quick conversation or a coffee after a workout. Over time, these casual connections can develop into meaningful friendships and a sense of belonging.
For regular member Desmond Moyle (Des), one of those friendships has become particularly important.
Over the past decade, Des has faced several chronic health conditions. As his health declined, he made the difficult decision in early 2026 to step away from his daily visits to the pool. When his mobility became more limited and he began using a wheelchair, Des started adjusting to a very different way of life.
After noticing his absence, his friend from Swan Active Ballajura, Lindsay, reached out. Lindsay offered his support and, over time, encouraged Des to return to the pool.
Back in the water
For Des, getting back into the water has been much more than returning to an exercise routine. The water provides a low-impact environment where he can work on his strength and mobility while moving in ways that are not always possible on land.
With Lindsay’s encouragement, the ongoing support of his wife and the cheerful assistance of Swan Active lifeguards and staff, Des is gradually getting back into familiar patterns.
It has not always been easy, but the pool has become a place where Des can focus on what he can do, rather than what he can’t. It gives him the opportunity to keep moving while working at his own pace.
Just as importantly, returning to Swan Active has reconnected Des with the people who have become part of his support network.
Each visit is helping Des rebuild strength, confidence and hope for the future.
More than fitness
For Swan Active, stories like Des’ demonstrate the important role community facilities can play in people’s lives.
Regular exercise can improve physical and mental health, but the benefits of being part of a welcoming community can extend far beyond fitness. It can provide motivation, companionship and a sense of belonging, particularly when life becomes challenging.
A regular visit to the pool can become an important part of finding hope and strength through meaningful connection.
If Des’ story sounds like yours, we’d love to help you get started. Swan Active has heated indoor pools with ramp access and a pool hoist, aqua fitness classes on the timetable, and membership options to suit different needs.
